Two (or More) Sides to Every Story - Even in the Peloton

There doesn’t seem to be agreement in the professional peloton about what to do now regarding the remnants of the Operación Puerto scandal. Two prominent Germans embody some of the different views.

Erik Zabel is fed up with the way things have developed since the Operación Puerto investigation began in May, including Discovery Channel’s signing of Ivan Basso. “In view of the development of this affair perhaps heads should roll within the UCI or WADA, he told Eurosport.

Jens Voigt (former teammate of Ivan Basso) on the other hand, had this to say about Basso’s recent move to the Discovery squad:

“I can definitely see that it is not good for our image,” Voigt told ARD. “To the public out there, it looks like nothing has changed.”

Longtime cycling fans will recall the shots of cyclists arguing instead of riding during a few stages of Tours past (the 1998 Tour comes to mind), when differences threatened to split the peloton down the middle. Certainly in a group that large not everyone will agree - and for the sake of the sport, I sincerely hope these guys can leave all of this at the door, especially since it’s likely they’ll be riding side by side in the very near future.
