A New Sponsor for Team Würth

By Jessica | Permalink | Comments No Comments | June 2nd, 2006 | Trackback

The cycling team formerly known as Liberty Seguros-Würth has a new sponsor: Astana, the capital of Kazakhstan. The team will now be known as Astana-Würth, and the Astana portion of the sponsorship has been endorsed by five of Kazakhstan’s largest companies. The current deal is for at least three years, and that could possibly be bumped to six.

Obviously, the draw for Kazakhstan is its national champion, Alexandre Vinokourov, who rides for the team. Vino has always been one to watch in the Tour, and would certainly have been the team leader this year. As we reported recently, however, the fact that the team director, Manolo Sáiz, is still at the helm makes Tour organizers rather unhappy. It remains to be seen whether they’ll turn their noses up at this new sponsor or whether we’ll be entertained yet again by Vino on the roads of France.
