If you’re not familiar with the ebb and flow of the cycling season, let me tell you that this time of the year is the transfer season. Sure there is three months of racing left with a few biggies such as the World Championships and Vuelta Espana, but now is the time riders renew contracts or seek other opportunities. During last year’s Tour de France, Alexandre Vinikourov was the center of major speculation foreboding his exit from T-Mobile. Rumors flew about that Vino would ride for Discovery. In the end, he didn’t, but you get the idea.
Well, the major rumor this year is Ivan Basso’s apparently impending departure from Team CSC. In an article published on eurosport.com, Basso is looking at jumping ship and being Lance Armstrong’s replacement on Team Discovery. I wouldn’t be terribly surprised that Discovery would be interested in a proven leader after their implosion in this year TdF.
I’ll claim ignorance and admit I did not know there was any sort of clash between Basso and Team CSC boss Bjarne Riis. Apparently there is. However, any transfer Basso might be interested in will be nullified if he’s suspended for 2-4 years if his involvement in Operation Puerto can be proven.
