Cancellara Expresses His Disappointment

By Jessica | Permalink | Comments No Comments | June 20th, 2006 | Trackback

Fabian Cancellara had a fabulous Spring, winning the coveted Paris-Roubaix trophy. But even that doesn’t erase his disappointment at not being chosen for this year’s Team CSC Tour squad.

Team director Bjarne Riis went for a team that was more well-suited to help Tour favorite, Ivan Basso, in the mountains. Cancellara is a time trial expert - there’s no question about that - but with no team time trial in this year’s Tour, he became less necessary to the team.

“Bjarne has made his decision, which I know was difficult for him,” said Cancellara. “He selected riders who are stronger than me in the mountains. It’s a tactical decision, and I have to respect it. What does that change? I can’t say right now. It’s going to take me a few days to recover from the disappointment.”

At the age of 25, Cancellara no doubt has many Tours - and many victories - left in his future.
