Last place deserves some love, too… Introducing the Red Jersey

World Cup Blog head honcho (and cycling fan) Bob has suggested that it shouldn’t just be the GC leader who gets to wear a special jersey. In what I think is a gesture of kindness and, perhaps, sympathy for the rider whose sole purpose in life is to sacrifice himself for his leader without regard to his overall place in the Tour, Bob thinks the rider in last place should also get a special jersey.

Since the last-placed cyclist is often referred to as the lanterne rouge, I think the jersey for the last guy on GC should be red. Bright red. Fire-engine red. And maybe, for good measure, Tour organizers could add a little frowny face to the back of it… Or maybe not.

So, who are the lucky Red Jersey wearers so far? The rider in last place after the opening (very short) prologue was Spain’s Ruben Lobato (Saunier Duval), who clocked in at a mere one minute and ten seconds slower than winner Thor Hushovd. After stage one, Danilo Di Luca was in last place… But he was sick and didn’t even start stage two, so I’m willing to let that one slide. After today’s stage two, Spain’s Aitor Hernandez (Euskaltel-Euskadi) holds the last spot, just over 14 minutes behind the leader.

Congratulations, Aitor, on receiving the Tour de France Logue’s inaugural Red Jersey! (Apologies to Lobato and Di Luca that we didn’t have it ready in time for you guys.) I wonder who the Red Jersey will go to tomorrow…

Hi Jessie,

The Red Jersey, though tongue in cheek sounds like a great idea. Dont know if any rider would want to suffer the shame of donning much less collecting it on the podium. A red lantern with a rider’s number on it would be much more hilarious for the two reasons below.

Here in Asia, red is seen as a lucky colour (ha, ha) Red temples, clothes, cars, bicycles etc.

A proliferation of bright red lanterns hung from sidewalk ceilings and lighted day and night is a sure sign that the business within is of ill repute, ie clients can get more than just a leg rub.
