I’ve been sitting here this evening wishing I wasn’t writing about doping and Lance Armstrong. Imagine my delight, then, when I found a story about how Viagra makes riders (ahem) “go harder.”
Apparently, someone decided to do a study on what effect the little blue pill would have on cyclists, since it’s supposed to increase blood flow. The study found that cyclists on Viagra could boost their performance (on the bike!) “by as much as 45 percent.” Viagra was found to help riders who are most affected by altitude perform as if they were not affected.
My favorite part of the whole thing, though, was this quote by the physiologist behind the study: “The participants told us that while they were riding the bike they didn’t know whether they were on the drug or not. However, what they did say was that in the showers afterwards they pretty much knew which pill they had been given.”
With that, I can now end my day happily.
