Politics of doping

Posted By Charlie On 4th July 2006 @ 10:23 In Travel Tips | No Comments

In an open letter to WADA president Dick Pound and French sports minister Jean-Francois Lamour, UCI President Pat McQuaid lashes back after criticism of the UCI’s handling of drug cases.

To start the verbal ping-pong, Lamour accused the UCI of being “timid” on the doping issue. He also stated “In the Tour de France, only the naive ones get caught.”

In McQuaid’s letter, he calls those accusations as “completely unjustified.” Instead of making critical statements and accusations, McQuiad feels that Lamour should focus on solutions. McQuaid also noted that it was the UCI who alerted the Spanish government of potential “widespread doping practises” in Spain.

With regard to Mr. Pound McQuaid stated. “Again Mr Pound why is it that the practises in Spain can go on under the radar of WADA without detection?” Not only is Pound causing rifts with McQuaid, you may also remember he ruffled Lance Armstrong’s feathers earlier in June who then called for Pound’s dismisal.

Obviously, the politics of doping gets dirty both in practice and in politics.
