In the midst of “Operacion Puerto,” a cyclist of a different doping scandal is back in the headlines - thankfully, for different reasons than he was last time.
David Millar’s two-year ban from the sport of cycling after a blood doping offense in 2004 ends on June 23rd - just days before the start of the Tour de France in Strasbourg. Millar, currently a member of the Saunier-Duval squad, will be riding the Tour in support of team leader Gilberto Simoni.
In his former life, before the doping, Millar was a time trial specialist. He routinely set tempos which were difficult - if not impossible - for the rest of the riders to match. I sincerely hope his return to the sport means good things… But am I the only one who thinks it’s more than a little cheeky that he’s been appearing in ads for a time trial bike called the Plasma?
