Spanish Doping Scandal Touches ’06 Tour

Manolo Saiz, in happier timesThough the arrest of what was then Liberty Seguros-Würth Directeur Sportif, Manolo Saiz, came during the Giro d’Italia, it is naturally still sending shockwaves through the professional peloton. Liberty Seguros pulled its sponsorhip almost immediately (it’s now called simply Team Würth), and now there are rumors that the team – whatever it’s called – will be uninvited from the Tour.

This is obviously devastating news (if it’s true) to Würth’s clean riders, as many of them will be faced with either scrambling to find themselves a new team in no time or just not riding the Tour. The former is difficult (not to mention damaging to one’s preparation), the latter is crushing. It’s not an enviable position to be in.
