Voigt grabs a stage win, Landis gives up yellow… For now…

Jens Voigt might just be my favorite guy in the peloton. He’s selfless, working his tail off for his leader (whoever that is), and he’s got a fantastic sense of humor. He asks very little in return for his efforts, but today he was rewarded anyway with a stage win.

From CyclingNews.com:

The longest and hottest stage of the Tour was also one of the strangest, as Oscar Pereiro (Caisse d’Epargne) took over the maillot jaune from Floyd Landis despite starting the day 28′50 behind the American rider. Pereiro was second in the stage behind Jens Voigt (CSC), who rode a great final kilometre to win ahead of the Spaniard. The pair were part of a break of five that escaped after only 23 km, and were half an hour ahead of the peloton at the finish. That time gap was enough to put Pereiro in yellow.

Landis seems unconcerned about the wardrobe change, as it relieves the pressure on his Phonak squad over the next few days. Pereiro is only a minute and a half over Landis on GC now, and he’s unlikely to stay there after the race gets into the Alps.
